What Paper.io 2 is about

Paper.io 2 is a territory game made by the mobile publisher Voodoo. It reached iOS in August 2018 and Android a month later, and an HTML5 version for browsers followed in March 2019. The version on this page is that browser edition: one arena, one small block of colour that belongs to you, and a crowd of rivals who all want the same space.

The idea is simple to explain. Leave your area, draw a line through open ground, and come back home. Everything you enclosed turns into your colour. The more of the map you own, the higher your score.

Controls

Your square follows the mouse pointer, so you steer by moving the mouse in the direction you want to go. On a phone or tablet you touch the screen and drag instead. Before a round you can type a name of up to twelve characters; if you leave it empty you play as "Player". The menu can be shown in English, Russian, Turkish, Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese, German or Italian.

The rules that decide each round

• While you are outside your own colour you leave a trail behind you. That trail is your weak point.
• If another player crosses your trail before you get back, you are out.
• If you run into your own trail, the round also ends.
• You can do the same to others. Cut through an exposed trail and that player is removed, which frees up the ground they held.
• Painting over someone else's colour and closing the loop takes that land from them.

When a round ends, the results screen shows your score, your best score, how long you survived and how many players you knocked out. From there you can play again straight away or go back to the menu.

How to grab more land in Paper io 2

• Take small bites. A short loop that returns quickly is far safer than a huge sweep across the middle of the arena.
• Use the edge of the map. Running along the border leaves only one side of your trail open to attack.
• Watch for exposed rivals. A player far from home with a long tail is an easy target, and removing them clears space for you.
• Never double back across your own line. It counts as a crash, even when no one else is near.
• Do not get greedy late in a round. A big territory makes it tempting to go for one more large loop, and a long trail is exactly what rivals look for.
